In the region currently identified as Terras da Beira, wine was, for centuries, a product of great importance, dating back to Roman times. But it was on the threshold of the 12th century, at the hands of the Cistercian monks, that the vine underwent a great increase.
Located in the heart of the northern interior, next to the border with Spain, in the most rugged and mountainous region of mainland Portugal, it encompasses the Marofa, Serra da Gardunha and part of Serra da Estrela mountains. The climate experiences an extreme continental influence, with impressive daily variations in temperature, short, hot and dry summers and prolonged, cold winters.
The soils are mostly granite in nature, with some presence of schist and, although less common, some sandy ancestry.
Beira Interior is subdivided into three sub-regions, Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel and Cova da Beira. The first two, Castelo Rodrigo and Pinhel, share substantially the same material specificities, despite being separated by mountain ranges with peaks over a thousand meters high, where the combination of poor soils, high acidity and robust maturation guarantees a promising future for the whole region.
