    Already during the occupation of the Romans, vines were cultivated and wine was produced in the region of Trás-os-Montes, which became known and appreciated for their qualities.

    To the east of the Minho and up to the Spanish border, with which it also borders to the north, there is a vast region that ends on the left bank of the Douro, where the Beiras begin.

    The soils in this region are predominantly made up of precambrian and archaic schist, with some granitic spots, with limestone patches of gneiss and alluvium existing in a small area.

    Wines from the Trás-os-Montes Region are quite different, depending on the microclimates in which they originate (altitude, sun exposure, rainfall, temperature, etc.).

    Thus, in the North zone, we find the DO Trás-os-Montes with its sub-regions "Chaves", "Valpaços" and "Planalto Mirandês".

    The wine with a geographical indication, commonly called "Transmontano" Regional Wine, is produced throughout the region of Trás-os-Montes.
